Introduction
MarkdownManager ("we," "our," or "us"), developed by Keeping Up With Technology (Pty Ltd), is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information when you use our mobile and desktop application, MarkdownManager (the "App").
Our Core Privacy Principles:
- Your Data is Yours: We do not have access to your documents. They are stored in your own local device and your private iCloud account.
- No Tracking: We do not use analytics, crash reporting, or tracking scripts within the App.
- No Advertisements: There are no ads in the App, and we do not collect data for advertising purposes.
- Minimal Information: We only use the data strictly necessary for the App to function.
Please read this privacy policy carefully. By using MarkdownManager, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.
Table of Contents
Information We Collect
MarkdownManager is designed to be a private tool. We collect virtually no personal information.
1. Document Content
All Markdown documents you create, edit, or import are stored on your device and synced via your private iCloud account. We (the developer) never see, store, or have access to your document content.
2. Device Information
The App may use basic system-provided information (such as operating system version and device model) locally to ensure correct rendering and functionality. This information is not transmitted to us.
3. Information We Do NOT Collect
We explicitly do NOT collect:
- Names, email addresses, or phone numbers.
- Location data or GPS coordinates.
- Contact lists or calendar data.
- Photos or media library files (except those you explicitly import into documents).
- Browser history or usage analytics.
- Crash reports (unless you explicitly choose to share them via Apple's system-level reporting).
How We Use Your Information
Since we do not collect your data, we cannot use it for marketing or sales. The data stored locally on your device is used solely to:
- Provide Markdown editing and previewing functionality.
- Maintain your document library, including pins and sort orders.
- Sync your documents across your Mac, iPhone, and iPad using Apple’s iCloud infrastructure.
We do NOT:
- Sell, rent, or trade your information.
- Use your data for AI training or model development.
- Profile you for commercial purposes.
Data Storage and iCloud Sync
Local Storage
Documents are stored on your device's internal storage using Apple's SwiftData framework. This data is protected by your device's built-in encryption and passcode/biometric security.
iCloud Sync (CloudKit)
If you enable iCloud, your documents are synced to your private iCloud container (iCloud.com.keepingupwithtechnology.markdownmanager).
- Private Database: Data is stored in your "Private Database" in CloudKit. This means it is visible only to you and is not accessible by the developer or any other user.
- Storage Limits: MarkdownManager does not impose any character or document limits. Your storage capacity is limited only by your personal iCloud quota provided by Apple.
User Control
You can disable iCloud sync at any time in the system settings of your device. You can also delete documents directly within the App, which will remove them from both local storage and iCloud.
Third-Party Services
MarkdownManager uses the following third-party infrastructure to function:
1. Apple iCloud / CloudKit
- Purpose: To sync your documents across your devices.
- Data Shared: Document content (encrypted and stored in your private account).
- Privacy Policy: Apple Privacy Policy
We do not use any other third-party SDKs, analytics providers (like Google Analytics or Firebase), or advertising networks.
Data Security
We rely on Apple’s industry-leading security infrastructure to protect your data.
- Encryption at Rest: Your data is encrypted on your device and in iCloud.
- Encryption in Transit: Data synced via iCloud is transmitted over secure, encrypted channels (HTTPS/TLS).
- App Sandboxing: On macOS and iOS, the App runs in a "sandbox" which prevents it from accessing data outside of its permitted folders.
Data Retention
Your Documents
Your documents are retained as long as you keep them in the App or in your iCloud account. If you delete a document, it is permanently removed.
App Deletion
- iOS/iPadOS: Deleting the App removes all local documents. Documents synced to iCloud will remain in your iCloud account until manually deleted via iCloud settings or re-downloaded to another device using the App.
- macOS: Local data is stored in your App Support folders. Deleting the App binary does not automatically delete your local document database.
Your Privacy Rights
Regardless of where you live, you have complete control over your data because you own the storage it sits on.
- Access and Portability: You can access all your documents at any time through the App and export them as .md or HTML files.
- Deletion: You can delete any or all your documents at any time.
GDPR and CCPA Compliance
MarkdownManager complies with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) by not collecting personal data. Since we do not possess your data, we cannot "sell" it, and we do not need to provide an "opt-out" for data sharing as no sharing occurs.
Children's Privacy
MarkdownManager is rated 4+ and is safe for all ages. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or 16 in the EEA) because we do not collect personal information from any user.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date.
